Ruijin Hospital will use high-tech dummies to train doctors

HIGH-TECH dummies are to be used in a city hospital to help train new doctors for real-life cases.

Ruijin Hospital is building Shanghai’s first medical simulation center, a 32,000-square-meter facility equipped with state-of-the-art health training and education resources, the hospital said at the two-day Clinical Education and Simulation in Healthcare Conference ended in the city yesterday.

The center, which will be put into use next year, is designed to provide health professionals, medical students and first aid volunteers with training under realistic pressures.

Remote controlled robotic patient simulators will allow young doctors to do checks, diagnosis and treatment and get realistic feedback, said officials.

“Surgeries requiring teamwork with doctors from different departments and nurses can be practiced in the center, which can stimulate various situations to challenge the trainees,” said Dr Shen Baiyong, vice president of Ruijin Hospital.

“We want to ensure every new doctor is fully trained and pass the check before serving patients. It is a further step to ensure health quality and patient safety.”
