No-smoking rules given a new push
A total of 66 institutions and five individuals were fined 157,750 yuan (US$25,040) last year for violating the city's no-smoking law, said the Shanghai Health Promotion Commission.
The individuals included doctors smoking in hospitals and restaurant customers who insisted on smoking even when asked to put out their cigarettes. Authorities warned and fined public transport staff, mostly taxi drivers, some 4,950 yuan for smoking inside the car.
With the two-year anniversary of the city's first anti-smoking law coming this Thursday, the commission teamed with other government departments to carry out a week-long supervision on smoking control in public places, especially restaurants, Internet cafes and karaoke bars starting yesterday.
"We will further promote the amendment of the local anti-smoking law, which for now doesn't mandate a complete ban on smoking in public places," said Tang Qiong, a commission official.
