Officials sound mosquito warning

Local health officials yesterday warned a rise in the number of mosquitoes this summer due to the short plum rain season and abundant rainfall, prompting them to take precautionary measures.

Still water from rain and quickly-rising temperatures after the plum rain season that ended on Monday are ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, according to officials.

June, July and August are usually the peak months for mosquitoes in Shanghai. Last year, the density of the insect doubled in June from May.

"We haven't worked out the fixed density of mosquitoes this month, but it definitely will be higher than last month," said Leng Pei'en, director of vector control department of the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

A 10-day campaign against mosquitoes started yesterday, focusing on construction sites, Metro stations, residential areas, underground parking lots and the outskirts.
