Old innovations
NEARLY 100 local and international students and teachers attending the fifth Shanghai International Youth Science and Technology Expo learned about some great inventions of ancient China at the Hongkou District Youth Activity Center yesterday. Students from eight countries and regions including India, Mexico and South Korea learned how to use looms, embroider fans and make pottery. They also watched a video about the four great inventions of ancient China — movable-type printing technology, gunpowder, paper-making and the compass. The expo is aimed at encouraging students to get new ideas to improve lives through invention and innovation, while at the same time helping international students learn about Chinese culture. The biennial event runs until Monday.
