Only 36% of women at small private firms get regular female checkups

ONLY 35.7 percent of women employees at local small private companies undergo screening for female disorders. The percentage is lower than for women factory workers.

A survey covering some 3,700 female office workers at small private hospitals found they have a poor awareness of health risks and a low screening rate for female diseases. Only 35.7 percent had gotten a partial or complete female disease health checkup last year. Fewer than 30 percent had adequate awareness of the need for regular health checkups.

"Their awareness is even lower than for migrant women, who have received regular education on the importance of female disease checkups," said Dr Zhang Peiyi of the No. 411 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army, which has worked with the Shanghai Trade Union to offer free female disease checkups for migrant women since 2009.

"Considered this survey, we will expand the program to female staff at such small private companies for early detection and treatment," Zhang said.
