Operation for arm in chest baby
CITY doctors yesterday performed an operation to remove the left arm of a 19-day old baby girl that was discovered to be growing inside her chest.
Zhang Wenxi, an Anhui Province native, appeared to have been born with only a right arm.
She was brought to the Children's Hospital of Fudan University by her parents 10 days ago with purple coloring and breath difficulties, an indication of heart problems.
To doctors' surprise, an X-ray revealed the little girl did have a left arm, inside her chest, pressing against her heart and lungs and the cause of her breath difficulties.
"This is the first time we have had a patient with an arm growing inside the chest," said Dr Tao Qilin of the hospital's cardiology center. "It had complete arm and hand bones and was a similar size to her healthy right arm."
The little girl's surgery went smoothly and she could be discharged in two weeks, according to Tang.
