Operation is a first for the city
A BABY girl is the youngest person in the city to undergo minimally invasive surgery to correct a congenital intestinal deformity, Shanghai Children’s Medical Center said yesterday.
Her abnormality was detected during her mother’s prenatal check and she was transferred to the hospital right after she was delivered.
The deformity was potentially fatal because it would have resulted in blockage when she ate food, doctors said.
“We decided to perform the operation the day after she was born, using a minimally invasive technique to ensure a quicker recovery and a smaller scar,” said Dr. Yan Zhilong, director of the hospital’s surgical department.
“She is a pretty little girl and we did not want our surgery to leave a scar.”
She has made a full recovery.
Yan said there are 5 million cases of digestive tract deformity in the world every year. Symptoms include the inability to eat and vomiting.
“If a deformity is confirmed, early surgery is necessary,” Yan said. “Minimally invasive surgery is the best solution for newborn babies.”
