Patient starts to recover
A SENIOR with a rare blood type who was suffering from serious anemia in a local hospital is now out of critical condition, his relatives told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
Zhang Jingdi, who has devoted a large part of his life to charity activities, has been transferred from the intensive care unit at Zhongshan Hospital to a normal ward yesterday morning after his condition stabilized, his son, Zhang Chunyu, said.
Zhang, 87, received AB Rh negative blood transfusions over the past few days. Last week he suffered anemia after having surgery to remove a tumor from his abdomen and his left kidney.
AB negative blood is rare among Chinese but is more common in Caucasians.
A dozen foreign readers of Shanghai Daily responded after reading about Zhang's story in the newspaper. Shanghai Daily received two e-mails yesterday from expatriates living in other Chinese cities. Both have AB negative blood. They said they were either willing to travel to Shanghai or ship their blood with professional assistance to help Zhang.
"I want to once again extend my deep gratitude to all of those people who have offered help," said Zhang Chunyu.
