Peak season of virus that targets children

A PAINFUL mouth infection, which usually affects young children leading to blisters, fever and a sore throat, has entered it annual peak season. A campaign has been launched on the social media warning parents not to kiss their children for fear of infecting them.

Herpangina is transmitted through fecal matter or respiratory droplets, and doctors have urged parents to take care of their personal hygiene.

It causes fever and other respiratory problems besides blisters in the mouth and throat. Children are also easy to get rash on the hands and feet. Doctors said there is no need to panic and the virus usually runs out within a week.

Summer is the peak time for infection and medical experts said the virus can infect a large part of the population. Many people, especially adults, can be infected with the virus without showing any symptoms. “Washing hands and rinsing the mouth can prevent the virus from spreading,” said Dr Li Jinkang from Shanghai Children’s Hospital.

Avoiding crowded public places and ensuring good ventilation at home can also protect the children from the disease, experts said.
