Program to offer free health checkups

A program offering free health checkups for 15,000 residents aged over 45 was launched yesterday by Zhongshan Hospital and the Erasmus University of the Netherlands.

The program, at Changfeng area in Putuo District, will eventually establish a health database for the middle-aged and elderly and will help in the study of chronic diseases.

"It is a multi-disease research that covers almost all the common chronic diseases for middle-aged and elderly people," said Dr Gao Xin, vice president of Zhongshan Hospital. "Chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, cerebral and cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver and osteoporosis will all be included in our project."

Researchers will work to find the causes of chronic diseases and then try to establish early warnings and treatments that might be introduced.

The program is supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, which has set up the database and has designated the program as a key public health program by the Shanghai Health Bureau.
