Protein center passes evaluation
THE world’s first comprehensive protein research facility, located in Shanghai’s Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park, has passed national evaluation, officials said yesterday.
The National Center for Protein Science Shanghai will be able to greatly improve China’s protein research, enhancing studies of major diseases, developing new routes and measurements of clinical diagnosis and treatment and exploring new drugs and biological material, experts said.
Work started on the 756-million-yuan (US$122 million) facility in late 2010 and trial operations began in May 2014.
It is the second nation-level major science facility in Zhangjiang, following the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility.
Both are included in China’s Big Science Project to boost the country’s scientific innovation.
The facility can perform high-precision and large-scale protein preparation and purification and is open to scientists and research institutes home and abroad, as well as company clients, said officials.
“It’s a global protein science technology platform and we welcome scientists and companies to use the facility and build deeper cooperation with us,” said Lei Ming, director of the center.
“We want to attract the top experts in the world to use the facility and introduce their research projects to China,” added Lei.
