Rumor of city quake branded as 'nonsense'
SHANGHAI Seismological Bureau has dismissed an online rumor saying the city suffered a 2.5-magnitude earthquake on Saturday.
"The rumor was absolute nonsense and the person who stared it should be punished by law," said Shou Haitao, a bureau official.
The rumor circulated widely across the Internet on many social network sites, such as Kaixin.com, saying the earthquake occurred on the border of Xuhui and Ming-hang districts.
Although most local residents said online that they did not feel the earthquake, many were frightened by the rumor as it also said the earthquake was so slight that people could hardly feel it.
Fears were also raised because of frequent earthquakes in other areas recently. Some believed the Shanghai "earthquake" was connected with last week's devastating incident in Qinghai Province.
