Scarred heroine gets a helping hand

A NANNY who was slashed on the face and body while protecting a baby girl is to be given plastic surgery tomorrow to repair the scars and restore some movement to her arms.
Wu Mei, 24, from Guizhou Province, became a national heroine after the attack in 2001. She spent two years in rehabilitation but was left with scars on her right eye and nose, and damaged muscles on the right side of her face and both arms.
Wu at home with the baby, Mei Lanxin, and the baby's grandmother when Ren Ruixing, a former colleague of the baby's father, Mei Delong, attacked the two women, trying to kill the baby. He was seeking revenge on the baby's father because he thought he had told the authorities about his drug addiction, which caused him to lose his job.
"I covered the baby with my body while I carried her into another room," Wu said. "The man used a 20-centimeter dagger to slash my face and hands." The attacker fled when the grandmother cried out for help. He was arrested a week later and has been executed.
"I have never regretted what I did," said Wu. "It was just instinct to cover the baby with my body to protect her from the dagger." Wu and a university student from Hubei Province are at the Shanghai Art Plastic and Cosmetic Hospital for plastic surgery organized by a charity foundation under the Ministry of Public Security.
Wu will be operated on tomorrow. "We will also give her psychological counseling before and after the surgery," said Dr Ren Tianping, Wu's chief surgeon.
Han Yun, 19, will receive laser surgery tomorrow to remove a facial scar he got in a fight with armed thieves in a Internet cafe on August 4, 2006.
