Scientists develop 鈥榮mart鈥 fibers

SHANGHAI scientists have developed a new type of smart fiber that offer opportunities for development in a range of applications.

The fibers are capable of motion and were inspired by the movement of plants, said Professor Peng Huisheng, who led the research team from Shanghai’s Fudan University. Fibers with strong contraction power, for example, could be used to help generate electricity, he said.

If woven, they could be turned into “smart” textiles, while in the industrial sector, they could be made to react to certain gasses or chemicals, and switch off valves in the event of a potentially hazardous leak, he said.

“The materials are promising in many applications in automated sensing and actuating,” Peng said.

The team has already developed a “smart curtain” that is sensitive to vapor and closes itself in high humidity.
