Shanghai IT workers win US$140,000 in top hacking contest in Canada
THREE IT workers who attended Fudan University in Shanghai won US$140,000 in prizes in a top hacking contest yesterday.
The team successfully hacked the latest Mac OS and Windows operating systems on the second day of the Pwn2Own hacking contest, held in Canada this year, according to the organizers of the event.
By cracking Safari of the Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 system in 15 seconds and Adobe Flash of Win8.1 in 20 seconds, they were the only group who hacked into the two products during the two-day contest.
The team included Chen Liang and Wu Shi, who founded computer security company Keen Cloud Tech. The other IT worker is Zhao Zeguang, who is an independent IT worker.
They are also the only participating team that has made a successful attempt against the Mac OS since 2011, according to Keen Cloud Tech.
They won US$140,000 for their successful performance — $65,000 for hacking Apple Safari and $75,000 for Adobe Flash, according to an announcement released on the contest website.
