Shanghai biology journal among top 10 in field

A SCIENTIFIC journal on plant biology published by the Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology in Shanghai has become one of the world's top ten plant biology journals and No. 1 in Asia, according to an international ranking system, officials said yesterday.
The journal, Molecular Plant, is published in English by the plant physiology institute under the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The journal placed 6.126 in the recently released SCI Journal Impact Factor (IF) rankings. The ranking reflects the average number of citations to articles published in science journals. It is frequently used as a proxy for the relative importance of a journal within its field.
That places it 10th among plant biology journals, which is very rare for a journal that began publishing only in 2008. Only a handful of journals in China have been ranked so highly.
An international editorial board of top experts has been key to the journal's quick development, said Chen Xiaoya, director of Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences.
The journal, currently bimonthly, which will become monthly next year, officials said.
