Shanghai dispels fears of city MERS outbreak
SHANGHAI health officials sought to dispel fears of a MERS outbreak in the city yesterday by highlighting the measures in place to identify and isolate anyone infected with the virus.
China’s first case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome was reported last Thursday — a South Korean man who traveled to Guangdong Province after ignoring a doctor’s advice to stay home.
Experts from the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention said the virus can only be transferred to close contacts of an infected person, such as family members or medical staff, and the possibility of a large outbreak was remote.
Spokesman Pan Hao said the city had the ability to test for the virus and there was a sound system in place to manage cases.
The first MERS case was reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and in 2013 Shanghai instituted regular training in management of the disease for center staff and doctors.
The center has enhanced its contacts and cooperation with ports and exit and entry authorities.
Officials advised anyone going to the Middle East to wear a mask, avoid crowded places and to seek hospital attention immediately if they develop a fever or cough on their return.
