Shanghai researchers get innovation prize
A Shanghai medical research team received an innovation prize at the National Science and Technology Awards in Beijing yesterday.
The team, led by Wu Mengchao, a surgeon at Shanghai Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgical Hospital, made breakthroughs that included new surgical techniques to improve success rates for liver cancer patients.
A foreign expert from Shanghai was presented with the International Cooperation Award in Science and Technology. Michael Phillips, 63, a Canadian, was honored for his efforts in boosting China's mental health research and suicide intervention.
Other Shanghai winners included Dr Fan Jia from Zhongshan Hospital for research on liver cancer surgery and Zhuang Guoshun from Fudan University for research into PM2.5 airborne particles.
