Shanghai sees big rise in HIV/AIDS cases

SHANGHAI reported 1,053 new HIV cases, 329 new AIDS patients and 49 deaths from AIDS in the first 10 month of this year, the municipal government said today.

The number of infected persons has increased by 29 percent over the same period last year. Most of the infected people and AIDS patients are male, and their main cause of infection is sexual contact.

By October 31, Shanghai has registered 5,992 HIV carriers, 1,213 AIDS patients and 241 deaths from AIDS since the first HIV/AIDS case was found in the city in 1987.
