Snow Dragon home from the ice
CHINA’S research vessel and icebreaker Xuelong, or Snow Dragon, returned to its home port in Shanghai yesterday, marking the completion of China’s 33th expedition to Antarctica.
The 161-day expedition set out from the city on November 2.
China’s first fixed-wing aircraft for polar flight, Snow Eagle 601, successfully took off and landed on Kunlun Station — more than 4,000 meters above sea level and close to being the highest spot on Antarctica.
The team also collected data during the expedition to prepare for the future establishment of China’s first airport on Antarctica’s ice sheet.
