Surgery for heroine of earthquake

A TEN-year-old girl struck by a brick while saving a little boy during the Ya'an earthquake in Sichuan Province underwent surgery at a local hospital yesterday to treat scar tissue.

Gao Yuan was watching TV when the earthquake struck on April 20. She ran to the aid of a three-year-old boy at home alone and grabbed him as the house collapsed.

Despite having been hit on the head by a brick, Gao cared for the child until his mother returned, and only then went to hospital for treatment.

She was honored by her school and town government for her bravery.

However, as the wound healed it left a scar on her head, which the young girl had to cover with her hair.

After Gao's story was reported by local media, Shanghai Dr. Laser Cosmetic Hospital brought her to Shanghai for treatment.

Yesterday the scar was treated and Gao's hair transplanted to help conceal it.
