Surgery for quake boy to be televised
A LOCAL television station will screen an operation live next Sunday at Renji Hospital on a 9-year-old boy with a congenital bone disease and a deformed leg.
The operation is part of the annual True Love Under the Blue Sky charity program.
The boy, Zeng Tao, from a poor farming family in Pengzhou, a region hit by the earthquake in Sichuan on May 12 last year, suffers a rare bone disease, which can lead to congenital deformity of the tibia, the outer and larger of the two bones in the lower leg. He is having difficulty recovering after breaking his lower leg seven years ago.
The boy, whose mother is blind and whose father is a temporary construction worker, broke his left leg when he was one and a half years old.
His leg never recovered, even after two operations in Sichuan, and the bones have knitted at an angle leaving his left leg 10 centimeters shorter. The boy has to jump to move around.
"Part of the bone broke through the skin recently and became infected," said Dr Dong Yuqi, from Renji's orthopedics department and Zeng's chief surgeon.
Zeng was chosen to be the beneficiary of the charity and was brought to Shanghai with his father on Tuesday.
