Swine flu toll: 5 dead
A 57-YEAR-OLD man died from swine flu early yesterday morning, bringing the city's death toll from the virus to five.
The man, whose name was not released, suffered complications of severe pneumonia and other chronic illnesses after being diagnosed with a severe case of swine flu on November 28, according to the Shanghai Health Bureau.
As of yesterday, the city reported 2,539 confirmed cases of swine flu. Among those were 73 severe cases, including five deaths.
Of the severely stricken, 31 patients were still being treated in hospital while another 37 had recovered and were released from hospital.
In the previous cases of death, swine flu claimed two men, 60 and 53, a 50-year-old woman and a five-year-old girl.
But health officials said the city's epidemic situation remained stable and under control.
Meanwhile, the city yesterday started to offer voluntary seasonal-flu vaccinations to 1.5 million elementary and middle school students.
Different viruses
Students and teachers in local primary and secondary schools are expected to receive the shots by the middle of next month.
Zhang Zeshen, vice director of Changning District Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said it's necessary for children to receive seasonal-flu shots after taking swine-flu shots because the two fight different viruses.
Zhang said it is normal for some people to suffer adverse reactions such as low fever and local swelling after receiving the seasonal-flu shot or the swine-flu shot.
Zhang advised people not to receive both vaccinations in the same week, but to take them more than two weeks apart.
Besides the children, the elderly, medical-care personnel and people involved in the 2010 World Expo also began receiving free voluntary seasonal-flu shots yesterday.
