TCM has presidential patient on the mend

SHANGHAI'S Ruijin Hospital had a very important patient - and he received the very best of treatment.

Malta's President George Abela, who came to Shanghai for the opening ceremony of the World Expo last Friday night, injured his back in a fall that very day.

Abela missed seeing the ceremony live but watched the event from his hospital bed.

President Hu Jintao visited Abela in hospital the next day and arranged for a plane to send him back to Malta, along with an in-flight medical team from Ruijin.

"The local medical system is fully prepared to offer the best care and service to visitors from both home and abroad for the Expo," said Song Guofan, a Shanghai Health Bureau official.

According to Yuan Kejian, Ruijin's vice president, the hospital received an emergency call from the health bureau last Friday morning saying that Abela had been injured and was on his way.

X-rays established that he did not suffer any broken ribs but he complained of severe back pain. A further checkup found a hairline fracture in the lumbar region.

The hospital used plaster with traditional Chinese medicine on Abela, who started to feel less pain and was much better by next afternoon.

Hu visited Abela in hospital on Saturday afternoon.

After learning that the Maltese government had failed to arrange an emergency medical charter plane, Hu ordered a Chinese aircraft to transport Abela home.

Abela left Shanghai on Monday accompanied by Ruijin's medical crew.

The team came back to Shanghai after a successful trip, bringing the heartfelt thanks of both Abela and the Maltese government.
