Tainted capsules found in Shanghai drug plant

ONE batch of medicine capsules containing excessive amount of chromium was found in a Shanghai drug plant, Shanghai Food and Drug Administration announced today.

Since the tainted capsule scandal made headlines in China last weekend, SFDA has ordered the removal of all medicines made by blacklisted manufacturers. It also checked two local capsule makers and 40 pharmaceutical companies that use capsules.

No chromium-tainted products were detected in the two capsule factories in Shanghai. Only one batch of capsules used by a local pharmaceutical company was found to contain excessive chromium.

SFDA has sealed the tainted capsules from Kangnuo Capsule Co Ltd in Xinchang County, Zhejiang Province, and informed the Zhejiang government.

Kangnuo Capsule is one of the two capsule producers exposed by China Central Television in an investigative report for using industrial gelatin to make capsules that have excessive amounts of chromium.
