Tick warning

THE Shanghai Health Bureau yesterday required local hospitals to increase inspections on patients with fever and a low platelet count, major symptoms of being bitten by infected ticks. People can contract Lyme disease after being bitten by infected ticks, usually in mountainous areas.

There are only sporadic cases of Lyme disease in the city as Shanghai is an urban area. Local health authorities urged people to be vigilant if going to the mountains and visit hospital immediately if they start to suffer symptoms such as fever, nausea and joint and muscular pain.
