Tragic mom gives gift of life to others

ORGANS from a 25-year-old mother who died of a brain hemorrhage have helped seven people in the city, the Shanghai Organ Donation Office told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

The woman, who officials called “Xiaojing,” the mother of a 1-year-old girl, was taken to the Songjiang District branch of the Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital after collapsing last month.

Despite emergency treatment, Xiaojing, who suffered from blood disorder aplastic anemia, died of a brain hemorrhage on June 3.

A Shandong Province native, Xiaojing had worked in Shanghai for nine years. She returned to Shandong for a year after her daughter was born, before returning to be with her husband in the city in April.

While the family was grieving, her father suggested that they donate her organs.

Initially, Xiaojing’s husband refused to countenance this, but his father-in-law eventually won him round, the hospital told Shanghai Daily.

“Her organs can save other people and they can live longer, thanks to her.” Xiaojing’s father said.

On June 4, the young mother’s liver, kidneys and corneas were removed.

They were transplanted into seven patients — a liver cancer patient, two people with kidney disease and four blind people.

All the recipients are recovering well and the blind people have recovered their sight, said Tang Zhaoxiang, deputy director of the organ donation office.

Tang praised Xiaojing’s family for their selfless decision, as many patients are waiting for organ transplants in Shanghai.

“Organ donation is not widely recognized in China. Since our office was established at the end of 2012, we have had only 26 donors,” Tang said.

“But it is encouraging that people are more and more aware of the importance of organ donation.”

This year, the office has had 21 donors, including six in June alone, Tang added.
