Union offers free tests for migrant women
FREE gynecological checks will be offered to migrant women from this week for early detection and treatment for diseases like cervical cancer, Shanghai Trade Union officials said today.
A trial launched by the union and No. 411 Hospital of People's Liberation Amy between March and December last year found four cases of gynecological cancers and 14 pre-cancerous changes among 5,185 migrant women.
From this weekend, the checks are available to all migrant women through company trade unions or individuals calling 56668280.
By 2008, there were 6.42 million migrant workers in the city with 5.2 million staying in Shanghai for six months or longer, accounting for nearly one-third of the population.
Doctors said migrant women have poor awareness about gynecological health and seldom go to hospital for regular checks. About 45 percent of migrant women undergoing free checks at the hospital found cervical and womb ailments.
