University, private care group join to train senior health care workers

SHANGHAI University of Traditional Chinese Medicine yesterday teamed with Pinetree Senior Service, a private nursing care provider, to establish a health service and management center that will train professionals to care for the elderly.

To meet the rising demand of caring for seniors, the professionals will be trained in senior medicine, rehabilitation, nursing care, pharmacy, psychology and nutrition.

In addition to talent training and research, the center will help set up industry guidelines and qualification standards for staff working in the industry.

Care for stroke victims is one of the center's major research tasks. A lack of after-surgery rehabilitation has resulted in a high percentage of disability among the 10.36 million stroke survivors over 40 years old in the nation.

Compared with the 80 percent rehabilitation rate of stroke survivors in Western countries, more than 70 percent of Chinese patients who survive strokes are left with disabilities

Like paralysis and serious language deficiencies. About 40 percent of them have very serious disabilities.
