Warm weather boosts density of mosquitoes

The density of mosquitoes last month was 37 percent higher than the same period last year due to warmer weather. Steady temperatures and frequent rainfall create ideal conditions for mosquitoes to thrive, the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.

A month-long citywide campaign against mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches and rats was launched yesterday ahead of Monday’s World Health Day. This year’s theme is vector-borne diseases.

“There have only been a few isolated cases of vector-born diseases like dengue fever and malaria in Shanghai after travelers return from Africa or Southeast Asia,” said Li Guangyao, vice director of the Shanghai Patriotic Health Campaign Committee, which is responsible for vector control in the city.
