Warning over odor medicines

LOCAL doctors have warned people over liquid medicines sold online for underarm odor, saying they usually contain chemicals that temporarily block sweat glands but may lead to burns or thickening of the skin.

Body odor is mainly caused by skin glands excretions and bacterial activity. The underarm odor is the result of the apocrine sweat glands and people with stronger gland have stronger odor, or osmidrosis. The odor can be reduced through regular BOTOX injection or cured by minimally invasive surgery.

"With new technology, surgeons only need to make a small cut less than 1 centimeter and suck out the excessive sweat gland," said plastic surgeon Li Yufei.

The incidence of osmidrosis is 3 percent in China, while it is up to 30 percent among Caucasians, Li said.
