AN online matching service between donors and patients in need of a stem cell transplant is now available, Shanghai Cord Blood Bank announced yesterday.
Umbilical cord blood and bone marrow are used in similar ways. The key in both are stem cells. Stem cells from umbilical cord blood are less mature than those in adult bone marrow, less prone to rejection by the recipient and more active in developing into different types of cells.
The blood bank provided 70 units of umbilical cord blood samples to 56 patients with blood diseases last year, bank officials said yesterday.
