Woman, 58, has baby daughter

A 58-year-old woman, who lost her only son, has given birth to a girl at Shanghai General Hospital.

The hospital announced yesterday that the woman surnamed Liu delivered the baby last Thursday and both mother and baby were stable and would be discharged soon.

Liu’s son died in 2007 at the age of 19. She and her husband decided to have another child. She became pregnant last November after a course of in vitro fertilization, or IVF.

Doctors said pregnant women of Liu’s age will suffer many complications. Delivering a healthy baby is a big challenge for both the pregnant woman and doctors.

In Liu’s case, they monitored the entire pregnancy and helped to control her conditions such as diabetes, heart problems and other potentially serious situations. Doctors conducted a cesarean operation on Thursday since Liu and the baby were regarded as being in a risky situation.

Dr He Yinyan from the hospital’s obstetrics department said the best age for a woman to deliver children is between 25 and 30 years.
