Woman with two wombs delivers twins

A WOMAN with two wombs has given birth to twins, a boy and a girl.

The twins, delivered on July 12, are healthy and the same weight as ordinary newborn babies, the father said when he visited his new family in hospital yesterday.

The incidence of having two wombs and both carrying a baby is lower than one in 5 million.

The chances of a girl and a boy and both surviving are even rarer.

The babies were born at Shanghai International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital.

Doctors monitoring the pregnant woman's condition found the boy to be in fetal distress on July 12 and decided to deliver the twins by cesarean section.

Both babies were in perfect health, doctors said.

Cheng Weiwei, the hospital's president, said that it was not rare for a woman to have two wombs. But when such women got pregnant with twins, both fetuses are usually in one womb, she said.

Women with two wombs can have difficulty in getting pregnant and are more likely to suffer miscarriage and premature labor after conceiving since their wombs are often smaller than usual and there may be other deformities in the reproductive system.
