Women say no to having a 2nd child

MORE than 50 percent of local mothers under 45 said they have no plans to have a second child, the Shanghai Women’s Federation said yesterday.

The finding came from a poll of 1,200 women conducted by the federation and Fudan University.

The two most commonly given reasons for not wanting a second child were cost and the lack of support, the survey said.

“I don’t want a second baby because I’m always at work and have no intention of quitting my job,” said Cheng, the mother of a 2-year-old girl.

“Money is not a problem, but what worries me is that there won’t be anyone to look after the kids,” she said.

About 15 percent of respondents said they planned to have a second child, with the most popular reason being that they wanted their first child to have a playmate.

The remainder said they had no strong feelings on the subject.

In a separate study of 1,300 children, the organizations found that more than 80 percent of youngsters get less than 10 hours’ sleep per day.

Many of them complained of feeling under pressure because of the amount of homework they have to do, while 70 percent of their parents admitted to assigning extra tasks for the children to do on top of their school work.

The poll also found that 55 percent of children exercise for less than an hour a day.
