19 tourists hurt in crash
THIRTY-SIX Shanghai tourists will continue a tour of Taiwan, despite 19 of them being injured in an accident on Friday, authorities said yesterday.
The injuries happened when their tour bus crashed into another bus in the opposite lane. Twelve of them were later taken to hospital, but it will not interfere the rest of the trip to the island, said their travel agency, Shanghai Spring International Travel Service.
All the tourists had bought travel insurance and were fully covered, the company added.
The driver of the other bus, who was seriously injured in the crash, is still said to be in critical condition.
The accident happened on Friday afternoon on a road in the Shihzih Township, Pingtung County, while the group was on their way from Kenting to Luye.
The cause of the crash was still unclear, but the other bus is suspected of having overtaken another vehicle just before the accident.
One of the tourists, surnamed Wu, said the bus first hit the group's tour bus and later crashed into a siding.
Friday was the fifth day of the group's eight-day tour in Taiwan.
Meanwhile, the search for 19 mainland tourists and their guide, who went missing on the island in a landslide last month, is still continuing.
