3 die on city's slippery roads

Three people died and eight were injured yesterday in four traffic accidents on slippery city roads in the morning's rainy weather.

A driver was killed in one accident about 8am this morning when two container trucks going in the same direction ended up in a rear-end collision on the Outer Ring Road of Wenchuan Road in the city's Baoshan District.

Witnesses said the victim, the driver of the truck behind, was stuck in the cab and died after the ambulance came.

Twenty minutes later, a pedestrian was hit and killed by a truck while crossing Jiangyang Road N. near the Outer Ring Road, just a few blocks from the first accident.

At 8:30am, a cyclist was killed by a fast-traveling van at the railway crossing on Qilianshan Road, police said.

Witnesses said the cyclist was hit in the head and died instantly.

Elsewhere, a bus rear-ended a dump truck about 11am at the intersection of Longwu Road and Baise Road in the city's Xuhui District.

Eight people were injured, including the bus driver. All were in stable condition in the afternoon, but four with more severe injuries.

The bus company admitted the bus had been going fast and promised to compensate the victims' medical fees.

Police took the bus driver for investigation.

Last night, more than 30 people were injured after a tourist bus rolled over on a highway in Shanghai.

The accident occurred at about 9:30pm in Fengxian District. All the injured were sent to the Fengxian Central Hospital. One of them was severely injured, police said.
