3 major Metro stations to be renovated
THE city’s subway operator will begin renovating three major Metro stations — People’s Square, Xujingdong and Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park — later this year, officials said yesterday.
The work will make it more convenient to transfer between lines and easier for passengers to evacuate in the event of an emergency, said Lan Tian, deputy director of the city’s subway operation center.
The operator has already renovated the Caohejing Hi-tech Park Station on Metro Line 9 and the Xinzhuang Station on Line 1 to better handle growing passenger traffic.
Some stations might be closed temporarily during the work, and shuttle buses will be arranged to transport passengers, Yin Jun, general manager of the center, told Shanghai Television Station, adding that detailed renovation plans will be publicized soon.
The operator will also improve service during rush hours, Lan said, which will be achieved by purchasing 130 new trains.
The shortest interval between rush-hour trains on Line 8 has already been reduced to 2 minutes and 24 seconds from three minutes, Lan said.
“We aim to shorten the intervals of downtown Metro lines to two and half minutes by 2020, when the shortest intervals for busy lines, such as Line 8 and 6, will be two minutes during rush hours,” said Yin.
