350,000 residents in Songjiang without tap water

MORE than 350,000 residents in Shanghai's Songjiang District have been without tap water since 5am today after pumps broke down at a local water utility.

It could take about 35 hours to fix the problem, according to a Xinmin Evening News report.

Residents found they had no tap water early this morning in an area about 60 square kilometers.

The district's tap water authority has sent 20 water-tank vehicles to the most densely populated areas to provide temporary supplies. Neighboring districts such as Minhang and Qingpu have sent fire engines to provide support.

By 1pm, most areas of Songjiang District were without tap water.

Residents couldn't bathe or cook at home this morning, a resident surnamed Zhou told the newspaper.

The problem was caused by a water leak from tube valves, which caused six pumps to break down at the second factory of Songjiang Tap Water Co. The pump room was flooded with the water measuring two meters deep, according to the report.

Songjiang New City and 10 towns are in the district.
