38 hurt as bus hits cement pier
THIRTY-EIGHT passengers were injured when bus No.640 hit an overpass pier on Pudong New Area's Jinxiu Road near Century Avenue yesterday afternoon.
Passengers said the accident occurred about 3:50pm when the bus driver swerved to avoid a taxi which made a sudden U-turn and then hit a pier instead.
The bus was traveling east along Jinxiu Road near Century Park's Gate No.1, when the car from the Jinjiang Taxi Co suddenly swung around, witnesses said.
The driver lost control after he steered the bus sharply to the left, breaking a traffic light and hitting the cement pier.
Many of the passengers on board fell from their seats and suffered cuts.
The front of the bus was badly damaged, with its windshield smashed and its bumper broken.
Traffic police stopped passing taxis to take the injured to Renji Hospital in Pudong.
Five victims, including the bus driver, suffered fractures and cuts to their heads but none of the injuries was life-threatening.
The five were still being treated in hospital last night. The other passengers, who had suffered minor cuts and bruising, were allowed home.
A Jinjiang taxi driver is being questioned by police investigating the incident.
