4 detained in raid on counterfeit water site
SHANGHAI Police have detained four people suspected of producing counterfeit drinking water after a raid on a makeshift plant in Songjiang District, officials said yesterday.
The squalid plant was located in the parking garage of a rented three-story villa at a residential complex known as Tanxianghuayuan, officials said.
A water tap equipped with a simple filter was allegedly the source used to fill repeatedly used containers that displayed fake labels for popular brands such as Nestle, Wahaha and Qiandaohu, officials said.
The factory was also the suspected source of so-called “magic water,” which falsely claims to have detoxification, cancer prevention and anti-inflammation properties on its label.
A 260-milliliter container of “magic water,” supposedly produced in Bama County in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, was priced at 198 yuan (US$30) per bottle.
The investigation continues, said police.
