50 flights delayed by heavy rain

STORMY weather resulted in over 50 flights being delayed yesterday afternoon at Shanghai’s Hongqiao and Pudong airports, and several roads being flooded, officials said yesterday.

The Air Traffic Management Bureau issued an orange alert, the second of its four-tier alert system, for flight delays for both airports from noon through 6pm because of heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunder.

It had predicted that the takeoff and landing capacity of Shanghai’s two airports would be reduced by half throughout the day.

The situation improved around 2pm when most delayed aircraft were able to take off at Pudong airport, but over 50 remained on the ground at Hongqiao, which was more severely affected by the inclement weather, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.

The heavy rainfall mainly hit the city’s Minhang, Xuhui and Fengxian districts. The areas near Pingyang and Lianhua roads recorded the heaviest rainfall — over 120 millimeters. Over 85 millimeters of rainfall inundated the Tianlin Road area in downtown Xuhui District, according to the Shanghai Flood Control Headquarters.

Four major roads in Songjiang, Minhang districts and Pudong New Area were flooded due to the sudden and heavy rainfall, said Zhang Zhenyu, deputy director of the headquarters.

A tunnel near Chunshen Road in Minhang was flooded with water 38 centimeters deep, according to the headquarters.
