88 ayi companies given sparkling praise

EIGHTY eight companies providing cleaning and other domestic services were cited as “model stations” by the Shanghai Women’s Federation yesterday.

The federation said they will serve as examples for the domestic service industry, which is currently rife with lax management.

Each model station will be subsidized a total of 160,000 yuan (US$26,256) by the government for three years to further standardize their ayi — or domestic helper — management in six aspects, such as carrying out identity checks, providing training and physical examinations and buying insurance.

Shanghai’s domestic service industry has grown very fast in recent years due to the aging population and rapid pace of people’s life. There are about 128,000 in-service domestic helpers in Shanghai, and most are migrant women whose rights are not guaranteed, said the federation.

“We ask all the model stations to treat every ayi as their own employee, rather than just being an agent,” said federation spokeswoman Weng Wenlei. .

Model stations should be open two years and handle more than 100 domestic helpers annually.
