A breath of fresh air

SHANGHAI’S air quality has stayed relatively healthy for 54 days so far this year, thanks to favorable weather including rain and winds which have dispersed pollutants, official data shows.

From February 10 to yesterday, Shanghai’s air quality has been at a good level for 30 days and at a moderate level for 24 days, according to figures from the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

But tonight, air pollution is forecast to briefly hit light to moderate levels, the center said.

Xujiahui Meteorological Station recorded 278.6 millimeters of rain in October, making it the fourth wettest month since 1874. The highest record, 310.5 mm, was in 1940, followed by 304.2 mm in 1889 and 295.9 mm in 1949.

Affected by high pressure, November had a dry but cold start. The mercury fell to about 8 degrees Celsius yesterday morning.

Sunny days will continue to Saturday and temperatures will gradually rise. Tomorrow, the high will reach 20 degrees Celsius and 24 on Saturday.
