Actor Wang faces penalties for DUI

WELL-KNOWN actor Wang Zhiwen was caught driving under the influence of alcohol on Thursday night in Shanghai, police said yesterday.

The actor, 46, was not in police custody although his driving license has been suspended and he will have to go to the traffic police for follow up punishment.

Wang is one of several celebrities to have been caught for drunk driving in the past couple of years.

Wang was caught at 11:50pm on Thursday in Changning District, where police had set up a checkpoint to randomly give drivers breathalyzer tests, according to officers.

Wang had a blood alcohol level of 0.28 mg/ml, surpassing the legal limit of 0.2 mg/ml.

The actor was stopped at the intersection of Hongxu Road and Yan'an Road W., outside Laowaijie 101, formerly known as Hongmei Pedestrian Street, a popular haunt among expats, officers said.

Yu Xiaodong, a captain with the district traffic police, said yesterday that Wang will be "fined 1,000 yuan and his license will be suspended for six months."

Wang will also have to attend a traffic safety class and all 12 of his demerit points have been deducted, according to the traffic law, Yu added.

The actor could not be reached for comment yesterday.

He rose to stardom for his role in "Satisfying A Craving," a TV series made in 1993.

Wang was part of the winning team in the celebrity section of the 2012 World Celebrity Pro-Am golf tournament at Mission Hills in Haikou, Hainan Province.

Gao Xiaosong, a famous Beijing composer, songwriter and director, was sentenced to six months in prison for drunk driving last year.
