Airport adds 10 self-service immigration channels

A FURTHER five self-service immigration channels have been opened at Pudong International Airport’s Terminal 1 to help speed up the flow of passengers over the busy Spring Festival travel period.

The additions take the number of machines in the terminal to 10, while there are a further 15 within Terminal 2, the entry-exit frontier inspection station said.

The e-gates allow passengers to complete the immigration process by scanning their electronic entry permit cards.

Under current rules they can be used only by Chinese natives — including those from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan — and foreigners holding permanent residence permits.

Aside from the nationality criterion, travelers must be at least 120 centimeters tall, an official told Shanghai Daily.

Meanwhile, the airport also yesterday said that the operating times of buses and subway services will be extended during the holiday period.

On February 13 and 14, three extra Metro Line 2 trains will run after the usual 10pm deadline, with the last one departing at 11pm. Aside from the airport, they will stop only at Chuansha, Guanglan Road, Century Avenue and People’s Square stations.

On the buses, the final departures on routes 7 and 8 will be extended for one hour from February 13-15, to midnight and 8:30pm respectively.

Similarly, the last Line 4 bus will depart at midnight daily through February 22.

A limited bus service running from the airport to downtown areas will be provided between midnight and the arrival of the final flights of the day, an unnamed official said.
