Airport reshuffle aims to improve efficiency

INTERNATIONAL travelers at Pudong International Airport's Terminal 1 will clear customs and immigration at the northern boarding area from tomorrow.

Shanghai Airport Authority is hoping to streamline the boarding process by reconfiguring the layout inside the terminal.

Work is due to be completed by the end of the year, airport officials said. The work is in preparation for Expo 2010.

The terminal currently has two check-in areas on the north and south sides of international departures.

The southern check-in area will be closed from tomorrow until June, when it will reopen with seven additional customer service desks.

When it reopens, the expanded area will be the sole international check-in area.

The northern check-in area will in the future be used only for domestic check-ins, and the current domestic check-in area will be removed, making way for more shops and restaurants.

The renovation work at the airport will improve boarding efficiency, said the Shanghai Airport Authority, who are hoping to cut waiting times by 25 percent.
