Airport taxis need proof to jump queues
TAXI drivers at Pudong International Airport will have to provide evidence that their previous fare was only a short journey if they want to jump the queue when they return for more business, officials said yesterday.
Under the old system, drivers whose passengers traveled fewer than 22 kilometers from the airport were entitled to claim a “short-distance ride ticket” if they returned to the airport within an hour. This in turn allowed them to jump to the front of the queue of cabs waiting for fares.
However, the city’s transport management office said it has received complaints from passengers saying they were coerced into stating a destination within the 22km radius so that the cabby could claim a short-ride ticket on his return. In a bid to stamp out the problem, authorities on Saturday introduced the proof system.
Drivers seeking to claim a queue-jump ticket must now provide receipts for their previous fare to prove it was officially short.
