Airport to help kids flying alone

CHILDREN flying solo out of Pudong International Airport can now take advantage of a new guardian service.

Staff at the airport will act as temporary carers for young people whose parents are unable or too busy to accompany them, an official said yesterday.

To take advantage of the service, parents should contact their airline and airport prior to the child’s arrival at the terminal building.

After that, the young traveler will be accompanied throughout the check-in process, security checks and getting on the plane, the person said.

According to China Eastern Airlines, more than 10,000 children take unaccompanied flights out of Shanghai every summer.

Most are migrants whose parents can’t afford to take time off work to care for them over the school holidays, so they have to travel to their hometowns to live with their extended families.

In the past, several airlines, including China Eastern, have offered care services to young travelers once on board the aircraft, but this is the first time airport staff have got involved.

Air China charges 200 yuan (US$32) for its guardian service, but most other carriers provide it free.
