Airports braced for crowds, rain, lightning

AIR travelers will have to endure more flight delays and mass crowds at both the city’s airports as the “summer transport season” began yesterday.
The season, which runs until August 31, is one of the busiest periods for civil aviation, especially given the frequent rains and lightning at this time of year, Shanghai Airport Authority said.
Typhoons and “intense convective weathers” are expected to influence the airlines’ operations, along with large number of passengers during the summer vacation, mainly at Hongqiao International Airport that operates domestic flights, the authority said.
The rainstorm and floods in many Chinese provinces have caused flight delays in Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Tianjin cities. Over 500 flights were canceled and 100 were delayed at Beijing Capital International Airport yesterday due to rain and lightning.
More than 50 flights from Beijing to Shanghai were canceled and about 20 from Shanghai’s two airports to Beijing were delayed yesterday.
To cope with more flight delays, Hongqiao airport along with China Eastern Airlines will set up temporary flight information screens at terminal buildings during periods of massive delays. The information of delayed flights will be updated every half an hour on the boards. It will also tell passengers how to change or refund their flight tickets.
“After midnight, the airport authority will make sure at least two restaurants, including a fast-food restaurant, stay open as long as there are remaining flights,” a Hongqiao airport official said. More channels will be open during peak periods during the season, along with extra security staff, to reduce passenger waiting times.
More sockets for mobile phone charging and extra luggage carts will be provided.
The peak hours in T1 building will be between 5:50am and 6:20am and 7am and 8am at T2 building, according to Hongqiao airport. The peak periods for international flights will be between 7:30am and 8am at T1 building.
